What do we know about how the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (or IPCC) modeling actually works? Why has the modeling community decided to model emissions separately from socioeconomic scenarios? When we hear that the RCP8.5 emissions scenario is considered a “business as usual” scenario, what assumptions are we making about all that business? And are those assumptions reasonable? Is there a climate scenario that represents an optimistic view of energy transition over the coming decades? And if so, what does it assume about the energy technologies that we will switch away from, and switch to?

These and many other questions are answered in this two-hour discussion on emissions modeling by an expert climate modeler from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), who co-chairs the working group on future scenarios for impacts, adaptation and vulnerability indicators of the International Committee On New Integrated Climate Change Assessment Scenarios. It’s a wonktastic deep dive into an esoteric subject… and it just may leave you feeling a lot more hopeful about the prospects for energy transition, and for our planet.

How does the IPCC climate modeling process work, and does any of it project a successful energy transition happening this century?

[871,111
310,107,21,842,99,261,307,223,24,309,26,312,311
post-1095","xen_episodes","type-xen_episodes","status-publish","hentry","category-climate-science-miniseries","category-energy-transition-show-podcasts","tag-carbon-dioxide","tag-climate-change","tag-coal","tag-cs-mini","tag-energy","tag-gas","tag-ipcc","tag-oil","tag-policy","tag-rcps","tag-renewables","tag-representative-concentration-pathways","tag-scenarios","xen_guests-bastiaan-j-van-ruijven

[Episode #51] - Climate Science Part 6 – Emissions Scenarios | The Energy Transition Show

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-51-climate-science-part-6-emissions-scenarios/","url":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-51-climate-science-part-6-emissions-scenarios/","name":"[Episode #51] - Climate Science Part 6 – Emissions Scenarios | The Energy Transition Show","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/#website"},"datePublished":"2017-09-06T16:00:57+00:00","dateModified":"2020-09-07T22:46:58+00:00","description":"How does the IPCC emissions modeling process work, and does any of it project a successful energy transition happening this century?","breadcrumb":{"@id":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-51-climate-science-part-6-emissions-scenarios/#breadcrumb"},"inLanguage":"en-US","potentialAction":[{"@type":"ReadAction","target":["https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-51-climate-science-part-6-emissions-scenarios/"]}]},{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/episode-51-climate-science-part-6-emissions-scenarios/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Episodes","item":"https://xenetwork.org/ets/episodes/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":3,"name":"[Episode #51] –
